When should I have my ventilation ducts cleaned?

When was the last time you thought about checking whether your ventilation ducts were clean?

Most people never think about their ventilation ducts, assuming they are clean enough. However, over the years, ducts begin to accumulate not only dust, but also debris, insects, and even pests such as rodents and mold. So, when is the best time to have your ventilation ducts cleaned?

How often should I have my ducts cleaned?

Even with the best filters, your ducts will still collect debris. Some particles will pass through the filter or enter the system through other means. Do not make the mistake of thinking that having a filter means your ducts do not need to be cleaned. Especially if you live in a highly polluted area, near construction sites, or in particularly windy or dusty conditions, your ducts will collect particles that can clog them or, at the very least, reduce the air quality in your home when you turn on your HVAC system.

The average duct system should be cleaned every two to five years. If your system is well maintained and you change your filters twice a year, you may be able to extend the time between professional cleanings. If your system has never been cleaned and has been in use for more than three years, a cleaning is likely necessary. Even a single season can allow enough dust and debris to accumulate to make your system less efficient than when it was first installed.

When should I have my air ducts cleaned?

Duct cleaning does not take as long as replacing your entire system, for example, but you will still want to schedule it during a season when you are unlikely to need your system. The best time to have your ducts cleaned is in the spring or early fall, after you have stopped using your system to cool or heat your property.

You may have noticed a dusty or musty smell when turning on your system. While this odor may fade after a few minutes, it is another strong indication that it is time to have your ducts professionally cleaned. This smell means that dust and debris inside your vents are being blown into your rooms along with the warm or cool air. Even if you use your system daily and the air coming from it smells unusual, it is a good time to have your ducts cleaned.
